MONSTER STEREO CARTRIDGE
========================
versus
STEREO PLAYBACK
===============
Monster Stereo - MPH - £24.95
Stereo Playback - Microdeal - £29.95
Those of you who are unlucky enough not to own an STE computer,
will be missing the STEREO sound, and absolute heaven of sound.
Well not now, because two cartridges have become available.
Microdeal's cartridge, is by AVR, the people that designed
Replay, which is equally the best sampler on the market today.
(See next issue for update on Stereo replay and Stereo Monster
Sampler!). This unit fits straight into the cartridge port, and
has two output phono sockets, for connecting to your Hi-Fi. The
unit is actually quite bulky.
The Monster, fits into the printer port, and has a lead you have
to connect to the monitor port, but there is a through port
enabling you to still connect up your monitor.
Both packages come with Demo disks, and playback routines, for
basic and assembler. Playback comes with colour and mono demos,
stereo drumbeat, a great four channel drum machine (in stereo of
course!), and source for all languages, enabling you to create
stereo musix in your own programs. Monster comes with a colour
demo, and source code for most languages, including routines to
playback stereo TCB Tracker musix.
The Monster sound cartridge works with TCB Tracker, and also
Audio Sculpture (of which the full version should be reaching MPH
about now), Stereo Playback, is compatible with all samplers and
Quartet.
Playback works a treat with Quartet, and Monster works a treat
with TCB Tracker.
Monster has a three way switch on the unit, wich switches
between, sample playback (double mono sound), tracker music
(stereo) and standard chip music. Playback does not output chip
musix.
A few games (from MPH) use stereo TCB Tracker music, and use
fully the Monster cartridge, just flick the switch and off you
go.
The Monster cartridge seems to be the best facilitated of the
two, with the option of chip and tracker, and sample music. As
well as the fact that some games have the option to output to
Monster.
Playback does have the advantage of being compatible with
Quartet, and budding Quartet ST users, will find this very
useful indeed, but if you'be got TCB Tracker, I'd go for MOnster.
